Stoke are set to offer Dominic Matteo another opportunity to prove himself at the Britannia Stadium.
The veteran defender was released at the end of last season following an 18-month spell at the club.
However, with the 34-year-old having spent the pre-season training with the Potters, Tony Pulis has not ruled out the possibility of offering Matteo a combined player-coach role.
"We asked Dominic to get involved with the young players and the reserves," Pulis told BBC Radio Stoke.
"He is experienced and wants to remain in the game and we want to give him the opportunity to enjoy coaching."
